MY ADVENT STORY - Waiting for God's Answer
"But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:14)
One of the great mysteries of God is that He is both infinite and intimate. As Holy God He is completely self-sufficient, but as Heavenly Father He is jealous for our dependence on Him. The magnificence of Who He is does not override His desire to be involved in the minute details of our lives, so much so that the Word became flesh and made His dwelling with us (John 1:14).
There had been 400 years of silence when the Word of God broke through and presented Himself in a new, fresh, and unexpected way. When God speaks He often does so in the most extraordinary ways, all the while desiring to capture our attention and captivate our lives. I'll never forget the Christmas I heard God speak and how the "with us" aspect of His character became a reality in my life.
I was 13 years old, we had just moved to Oregon two years earlier, making the arduous trek across country, selling most of what we owned and only taking what we could fit in a small moving truck. The move from the city to the country was to bring a fresh start as we drove across the state line to what my dad affectionately calls, "God's country."
And that's exactly what we found shortly after we arrived. My dad had not been in church for decades and after one visit with his sister to her church he re-dedicated his life to the Lord. His new found faith was met with intense opposition on the home-front and our fresh start became a battle of wills.
